Democracy has been particularly challenged in recent years due to the rise of populism and demotatorships, fake news, shrinking space for civil society and, more recently, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. All of this contributes to a climate where young people fear retribution when exercising freedom of expression and, at the same time, “show a high degree of political interest but a low degree of engagement with essential democratic processes”.
Concerns regarding the health of democracies in Europe have been consistently raised, especially in view of the successive and multiple crises that trouble the perspective of growing up with confidence about the future.
The Democracy Here | Democracy Now youth campaign of the Youth Department of the Council of Europe is a response to these challenges. It aims at revitalising democracy and for strengthening mutual trust between young people and democratic institutions and processes.
The Campaign focuses on access to human rights, meaningful youth participation and the impact of digitalisation as factors of democratisation. The Campaign is based on activities undertaken with young people and youth organisations at local, national and international levels, supported by national contact points and European partners.
The Council of Europe Youth Action Week
The Youth Action Week is the flagship event of the Democracy Here | Democracy Now campaign and of the anniversary of 50 years of the youth sector in the Council of Europe. The event is organised under the patronage of the Irish Presidency of the Committee of Ministers
of the Council of Europe and in partnership with the City of Strasbourg.
Aim
The Council of Europe Youth Action Week brings together activists, civil society, member States and partners of the youth sector to strengthen the youth campaign for revitalising democracy and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the youth sector of the Council of Europe.
Objectives
- To discuss and deepen the understanding of the current challenges and attacks on democracy and their impact on young people and society
- To design and plan interventions, activities, actions, projects in the youth campaign with a focus on revitalising democracy, meaningful youth participation and digitalisation
- To celebrate the fifty years of the youth sector of the Council of Europe and reflect on its relevance for young people, youth policy and the mission of the Council of Europe in promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law
- To give an impetus for joint action and cooperation in the framework of the Democracy Here | Democracy Now campaign at local, national and international level.
Programme and methodology
The programme of the Council of Europe Youth Action Week is thought to be an experience of participatory approaches characteristic to non-formal education and youth work. The programme will feature plenary sessions and will be based on working groups organised according to the three main themes of the campaign. The Youth Action Week programme will also incorporate proposals for themes, topics and activities received from national and European campaign, partners and activists.

Participa a l’ECO-CAMP “Rural life” a Envall del 4 al 14 de juliol

Més informació
L’ECO-CAMP ‘Rural life’ consistirà a explorar el concepte d’ecovoluntariat i permacultura des d’una perspectiva intercultural. Del 4 al 14 de juliol a Envall, Lleida. A partir de 16 anys
THE ECO-CAMP “Rural life” – refugi casa Bigodé
Envall is a Catalan village in the Pyrenees that was abandoned for nearly 30 years as a result of the rural depopulation caused by the exodus towards the cities. 20 years ago a small group of people started to come back to the village. These people started a cooperative to bring back life in this rural village. The Envalls cooperative is now promoting 2 projects aiming to repopulate and generate income for the village. The first project is the Refuge, a mountain hostel for people who want to explore the mountains, and the second is a future School of the Mountain. In 2020 the first house was restored. It was an old haystack that now became the Refuge or mountain hostel. The Refuge can host up to 24 people and it is a space that suits all needs and ages.
In line with the principles and values of the cooperative to go back to nature and to live in respect and harmony with the natural environment and to be as much as possible self sustainable, the hostel only offers vegetarian food. All vegetables and other ingredients are locally produced, making this project quite unique compared to other tourist accommodations.
VOLUNTEER TASKS
Apart from the usual tasks typical of a work camp or any project (cleaning, cooking, checking that there is good group dynamics), participants will have the opportunity to explore different aspects of eco-sustainable volunteering in line with the philosophy of the community that will host them. Together with the local community the following tasks were selected to be carried out by the eco-camp groups:
- Restoring a dry stone wall. Dry stone construction is a very old and traditional building technique in the Pyrenees. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn this technique and to understand how constructing with local materials and old techniques can be a sustainable alternative to modern high energy consuming and polluting building techniques. This is hard work since stones will have to be carried, cleaned and put together.
- Maintaining the permaculture garden. The garden wants to provide the local community with vegetables and fruits. The cooperative started a permaculture garden as a way to grow vegetables in respect with nature. To find out more about permaculture you can visit the Permaculture principles website. The founding principle of permaculture is earth care, people care and fair share. The work in the garden is important for the community and especially in summer, when it can be really hot, can be demanding. A hat to protect against the sun might be needed. Volunteers will learn about permaculture design and how it benefits people and nature.
- Decorating the workshop room with clay paint. The cooperative wants to promote sustainable building and therefore most materials used are natural materials. The workshop room of the hostel needs to be finished with clay paint. Volunteers will learn about this material and how to use it as an alternative to chemical paint.
- Constructions with wood. Small furniture will be produced with wood.
- Apart from different team building activities to get to know the other participants and the different cultures, there will be 4 workshops offered by the local community.
Each day the participants will be divided in different groups in order to carry out the different tasks. Volunteers will have the possibility to learn different skills, work together in a team and take responsibility for different tasks.
BACKGROUND OF YOUTH GREEN DEAL PROJECT
Youth Green Deal is a partly European funded project aiming at building the capacity of youth organisations promoting eco-volunteering in the Mediterranean area. The international volunteer projects bring together a group of 20 young people (18-30 years old) who will work with the local community to support them in the environmental work they are doing and to learn from each other and the community.

What is this project about? – Wikipedia for peace: Queer [Edit]
There is a representation problem on Wikipedia. Some groups are better represented than others,. Only 17% of all biographies on English Wikipedia are about women, a lot of content about the Global South is missing. Also queer people – Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans* and Inter* people – are underrepresented.
A queer summer camp around learning how to edit Wikipedia
We want to gather young people living in Armenia, Austria, France, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia for a summer camp in Vienna around Wikipedia. We want to edit, translate and add content on Wikipedia around queer people, queer concepts and queer history. And at the same time, we want to cook together, discuss LGBTI+ issues, go hiking and build queer solidarity across countries and continents.
Let‘s make Wikipedia more queer!
Through the articles that we write we hope to increase the visibility of LGBTI+ issues on Wikipedia in different languages and also build knowledge fundaments for international understanding and solidarity between queer people. And we want to attract more young queer people to the project to begin with!
Who can participate?
Be queer, questioning or a strong ally. This project is made by LGBTQIA+ people for LGBTQIA+ people or those who are still on discovery for their sexual or/and gender identity. With this project, we want to create a safer space for all of those of us who identify with being trans*, inter*, non-binary, lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual and queer.
Living in Armenia, Austria, France, Spain, Sweden or Tunisia and be between 18 and 30! We unfortunately cannot make exceptions due to our funding. Be able to participate in the whole period 2-10 August 2022! Due to our funding, we cannot reimburse you for your travels or other expenses if you arrive late to the project or
leave early.
If you need more information, READ THE CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS.
When: 2-10 August 2022
Deadline to apply: As soon as possible!
